What is it?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

A spray specially intended for use with bears, not a self-defence product against dogs or human assailants. Discharging the spray creates a protective cloud between the user and the bear. The active ingrediant is Capsicum, a derivative of red pepper oil, which causes temporary inflamation of eye, nose and lung membranes. There are several manufacturers in North America; experts recommend that the Capsicum content comprise at least 0.9%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does it work?<\/em><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Yes, independent scientific research has confirmed the effectiveness of such spray, which can even be more effective than a gun. According to the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service, bear spray is the best method for fending off threatening and attacking bears and for preventing injury. Results were recently published from a scientific study on the effectiveness of spray at detering bears. A total of 72 cases were analyzed in which people used bear spray in self-defence. The spray stopped the bear in 92% of cases and 98% of people carrying spray escaped injury. Among the authors of the study was Prof. Herrero, author of the well known book, “Bear attacks: their causes and avoidance”<\/em>. Their conclusion was that bear spray is very effective and people who spend time in areas with bears should consider carrying it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Based in Montana, USA, Counter Assault<\/a> is the original developer of “extinguisher-style” bear sprays and a leading manufacturer since 1986. Their bear spray contains 2.0% capsaicin and related capsaicinoids (the maximum allowed by US law) and has been repeatedly rated as the best, either meeting or exceeding all bear biologists’ recommendations. The effectiveness of Counter Assault’s products has been proven by the US National Park Service, the US Forest Service and the University of Montana.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

A recent innovation increased the spray distance of the larger can up to 40 feet (12 metres). Other special features of Counter Assault bear spray include non-freezing formula, glow-in-the-dark safety clip and a special tie attachment to prevent loss of safety clip.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
